5 Things to Do in Tulum, Mexico

Mexico is the perfect place to visit for relaxing in the sun and kicking back some cervezas. Some typical hotspots include Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen.

Recently, the little town of Tulum (located waaay down the Yucatan Peninsula) has been getting a lot of attention. Maybe for its quieter beaches, remote location away from the tourist crowds, or its adjacency to the ancient Mayan temples.

Over the holiday break, I took a little New Year retreat and visited Tulum. After a 4 hour flight and 1.5 hour taxi ride, we arrived in paradise.

Mexico, you’ve been a treat. The best way to start off 2015 ??

It became our sanctuary. From lounging by the pool or swimming in the blue-green ocean, to swaying on the hammock with a coronita. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the New Year; relaxed, refreshed and renewed.

But being the adventure-seekers that we are, it wouldn’t be a vacation without some exploring! If you happen to travel to Tulum, here are a few quick things you should try to do:

1. Tour the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum.

2. Go diving and swimming in a cenote.

3. Visit Xel-Ha for swimming with dolphins and snorkeling.

4. Check out the nightlife in Playa del Carmen.

We just so happened to stumble upon a Steve Aoki concert at an outdoor beach club.

5. Shop the hand-made goods like magnets, ornaments and sugar skulls.

The possibilities are pretty endless. You can go boating, fishing, take a day trip to the island of Cozumel, eat lots of tacos and guacamole, or just sit back and drink some authentic margaritas!

No matter what you’re doing, be sure to enjoy yourself. Appreciate the company of who you are with and kindness of the Mexican people. Soak in the sun and the scenery, and be grateful for another day you get to experience life and all of its beauty.
